Are unelected monarchies a thing of the past or have they got a future?

Monarchs claim their right to rule from God....of all people.So, how do you compete with God as an ordinary citizen? If you deign to disagree with any monarchical pronouncement then you are a blasphemer and if not burnt at the stake or beheaded then you run the risk of extreme measures such as posters on Yahoo Answers wishing you malignant cancer in response to mild fun being poked at the British Royal Family for instance? How ignorant are the Brits in any case and are they all like this?
