How do you wear stockings?

I understand how some panties have catches to clip the stockings on, but what about when you have a seperate suspender belt? presumably you put the stockings and suspender belt on after the panties (so the strappy bits are over the top) but this means you need to take them off first aswell, -isn't that a bit fussy in the heat of the moment?! also, how high should you wear a suspender belt (of the thin strap variety, not one of those wide ones that overlaps the panties) and how far up your thigh should your stockings end? Any stocking ettiquitte much appreciated!
