Do you think America will develop bad foreign relations with Italy because of the Amanda Knox case?

Now the Italians are threatening her parents with jail time? Do you think the American government might have to step in at any point? From what I've seen I don't think she did it and surely the parents should not be threatened with jail time over slander - in America you don't even face criminal charges for slander.
